Health Insurance for physical therapy:
Most health insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, cover outpatient physical therapy if it is deemed medically necessary. Coverage details vary by plan, so it’s important to check with your insurance provider.
Your doctor’s referral is recommended, but not required.
Michigan allows restricted direct access to physical therapy, meaning you can see a physical therapist without a physician’s referral for up to 10 visits or 21 days, whichever comes first. Beyond that, a referral may be required by your insurance provider.
Michigan health insurance covers most medically necessary physical therapy.
Medically necessary physical therapy is treatment prescribed to address a specific injury, condition, or disability that affects your ability to perform daily activities. Your insurance provider will determine what qualifies under your plan.
Your health insurance may have limits on the number of physical therapy sessions covered.
Some insurance plans may limit the number of sessions covered annually. You can check your plan’s visit limits by contacting your insurance provider or letting us check it for you by visiting our Insurance Precheck Page.
Most plans require some out-of-pocket costs.
Out-of-pocket costs depend on your insurance plan. These may include co-pays, deductibles, or co-insurance. Before your first session in our clinic, you can work with our billing team to determine your financial responsibility.
What happens if I can’t afford the deductibles and out-of-pocket costs?
If your health insurance doesn’t cover physical therapy, we offer self-pay options or payment plans. Please let us know if you would like to discuss your options.
Can auto insurance or workers’ compensation cover your physical therapy?
Yes, auto insurance and workers’ compensation may cover physical therapy if the treatment is related to an accident or workplace injury. Please check with your employer or claims adjuster for more information about your unique situation.
You can find more information about Michigan’s physical therapy regulations by visiting the Michigan APTA website.
